I first came across Mingon Fogarty’s podcast Grammar Girl’s Quick and Dirty Tips for Better Writing while finishing my English degree in Education. I was in my very last semester before student teaching and I could not have found a better friend than I did in Mingon’s voice. What her podcast showed me was that [...]

It took me even longer than I had hoped to finish writing this post and publish it. Writing this reminded me of the relationship I need to have with writing in order to be a good teacher and a good person who teaches. Since I last wrote, I've felt more stuffy, cut-off, unsure, and generally more stressed out about my role as an educator. When you sign up for this job, you're signing up for a lot. You're signing up for something vital to a lot of people's lives and well-being, so you need to treat every thought and emotion with the same respect. Slowing my mind down and writing what I am thinking and feeling is the only way I know to process what I need to do from what I want to do.

While at the National Writing Project Annual Meeting’s General Session, I wrote about my initial experiences with the NWP. Donalyn Miller was on our minds as we, a group of 1,300 or so teacher-consultants, considered how we moved from silence to whispering. Here’s what my pen did: I love paper with no lines, so it’s [...]

10/29/2010 I spent this past weekend with an intimidatingly credentialed group of educators (I believe I was the only one without a PhD in progress). Writing Center directors, Composition program directors, professors and teachers of all variety in the greater scope. This incredible workshop was sponsored by the University of Missouri-Kansas City, who played host [...]

When I wrote "Formula for Success," a little more than a year ago, I was just trying to put the next brick in my blogging wall. When I stumbled upon the "Rethink Learning Now" campaign website (which now redirects to its parent non-profit site) I saw a call to submit writing about experiences in learning. I can't honestly remember what went through my head, but after browsing and reading through others' stories, I pasted in the text of my most recent blog post.
